Shinkage-ryu
Having studied Nenryu, Katori Shinto Ryu and Yinryu, which are regarded as the three main sources of Japanese swordsmanship, Kami-izumi Ise-no-kami Nobutsuna extracted the 'way of turning' (Marobashi) from Yinryu in particular and founded the Shinkage-ryu style. Later, the second generation was succeeded by Yagyu Sekishusai Munetoshi, whose son Yagyu Tajima-no-kami Munenori became the military instructor of the Tokugawa shoguns, and the Shinkage-ryu became the 'Goryugi-hyoho' of the Tokugawa clan and became renowned for its bravery. The sword of Shinkage-ryu eliminates posture in mind and technique, and its ultimate philosophy is "Mugyo”, which unifies attack and defence. Formed in 1969 by Tadashige Watanabe, heir to the 22nd generation of Shinkage-ryu Hyoho, the Shinkage-ryu Hyoho Marobashi-kai has been actively engaged in the embodiment of the art of ‘Marobashi’ and in the promotion and honouring of Shinkage-ryu.
